Captains in Star Trek Online often find themselves in situations where they may want a kinetic projectile to use when an enemy vessel’s shields have gone down. The game has a huge number of torpedo weapons available from photons to quantums to everything in between.

After sifting through everything available, the voces at Vox Ex Machina have boiled down the piles of projectile launchers down into a very small stack that you can read through quickly.

Without further ado, let’s look at the top five torpedo weapons in STO.

5. Kentari Missiles

As a space weapon, the [Kentari Mass-Produced Missile Launcher] is somewhat unique in that instead of a torpedo, this weapon launches missile swarms. On impact, they inflict the standard kinetic damage as well as lingering radiation.

The missile launcher can only be obtained as a reward from the featured episode mission “Mirrors and Smoke.”

When fired, Kentari missiles spread out from the ship and streak towards targets – they’re a little on the small side, but when they explode there is a bright flash upon impact. Also, when the torpedo high-yield firing mode is activated a single missile is outfit with a nuclear warhead that explodes brightly.

“Rapid-fire, on-target. A swarm of missiles descends, greeting the attackers with detonations, a bumpy ride, and some pretty sweet special effects,” TheGoddessInari, Twitch streamer and STO player, told Vox Ex Machina. “Missiles launched from the kitsune defense fleet seem to deter even the largest of enemies.”

These missiles have a short, 2.5 second recharge rate and deal kinetic damage on impact. They also leave behind a damage over time radiation effect for 3 seconds. And, as a secondary effect, there is a 10% chance to reduce flight turn rate by 60% for 10 seconds (100% chance for a high-yield missile).

This missile launcher comes with an innate 2% critical chance and 20% critical severity.

4. Neutronic Torpedo

The [Neutronic Torpedo Launcher] is built on a quantum torpedo platform and fires a warhead that iridates a ship with Neutronic radiation upon detonation, which reduces a vessel’s power output.

This torpedo is part of the Delta Alliance Ordinance space set obtained from the Delta Alliance reputation system. Adding extra pieces from this set will reduce the firing rate cooldown for this torpedo (by 20%) and increase all radiation damage by 13.8%.

Neutronic torpedoes look much like purplish-tinged quantum projectiles when fired. They have a bright white center that streaks towards the target surrounded by rapidly orbiting swirls of white energy limned with a violet shimmer.

Since the Neutronic torpedo is a quantum torpedo casing, it impacts for a massive amount of kinetic damage but it fires more slowly than other torpedoes with a 15 second reload time. Upon impact, the torpedo will splash radiation damage in a 3-kilometer radius that will irradiate foes causing direct damage, then it applies -25.1 to all subsystem power and -17.3 power transfer rate for 6 seconds.

This torpedo also has an innate 2% critical chance and 20% critical severity.

3. Quantum Phase Torpedo

The [Quantum Phase Torpedo Launcher] fires quantum torpedoes with an extra warhead payload that also neutralizes shields in a radius around its impact – this can be very useful for stripping shields from enemy vessels.

This torpedo is part of the Quantum Phase Catalyst space set obtained as a reward from completing the “Sunrise” mission. Adding pieces from this set increases the effectiveness of the torpedo’s shield drain ability.

The projectiles fired from this launcher look like swirling motes of white energy, twirling around a bright white center as they hurdle towards targets. Upon impact, the detonation sprays a bright white radial splash of white light that expands from the target vessel and impacts the shields of other nearby ships.

The Quantum Phase Torpedo is a quantum torpedo, which means it deals relatively high kinetic damage on impact but has a slower fire rate. The radial quantum destabilizing blast inflicts -551 to all shield facing affected to ships within a 2-kilometer radius. The high-yield torpedo firing mode increases this radius to 4 kilometers, but torpedo spreads only trigger the detonation on the primary target.

The shield drain caused by this torpedo can be increased by points in Drain Expertise.

This torpedo also comes with an innate 2% critical chance and a 20% critical severity bonus.

2. Gravimetric Photon Torpedo

The [Gravimetric Photon Torpedo Launcher] delivers a very interesting photon warhead that can create a shear in space-time that leaves behind a gravimetric rift that pulls in enemies and crushes their hulls.

This torpedo is part of the Photonic Arsenal space set obtained from the Dyson Joint Command reputation. It can be combined with other pieces of the same space set to greatly increase its damage, critical chance and critical severity.

The Gravimetric Photon Torpedo looks very similar to a standard photon torpedo, but perhaps a little bit brighter with extra specular effects as it flies. When it detonates and leaves behind a gravimetric rift, the rift looks like a small gravity well – a semitransparent black center surrounded by rings of shifting red and black.

This projectile deals less kinetic damage on impact, like most photon torpedoes, but it has a relatively faster reload rate. Upon impact, it has a 33% chance to tear a hole in space-time, which creates a 1-kilometer radius Gravimetric Rift for 3 seconds that deals kinetic damage over time and slowly pulls in nearby vessels.

The damage caused by the Gravimetric Rift is also amplified by points in Exotic Particle Generator and the radius of the rift can be increased by points in Control Expertise.

The torpedo also comes with an innate 6% critical chance.

1. Particle Emission Plasma Torpedo

The [Particle Emission Plasma Torpedo Launcher] is probably one of the most interesting torpedoes in STO as it’s a unique, crafted torpedo.

It is affectionately known in the community as the “PEP” torpedo.

To obtain this torpedo, players must reach level 15 in crafting Projectiles School. It also requires an R&D Projectile Weapons duty officer and a vast variety of components. However, the outcome of this crafting is extremely fun.

A PEP torpedo looks like an unstable mass of green barely-contained static electricity as it flies towards targets and when it detonates, it leaves behind a hazy, green cloud that damages and slow enemy vessels.

“It does both kinetic and plasma damage and the cloud is boosted by Exotic Particle Gen,” Cynicman told Vox about why he likes this torpedo, “causing it to synergize well with science vessels and exotic damage builds.”

The projectile deals massive kinetic damage (like any torpedo) in a 90-degree arc of fire and, in addition to its normal plasma burn effect, will leave a Plasma Particle Emission Cloud effect at the target location that extends .5 kilometers for 6 seconds. The cloud inflicts 666.4 plasma damage every second (amplified by every point in Exotic Particle Generator) and debuffs for -90% turn rate, -90% impulse speed.

The torpedo also has an innate 2% critical chance and 20% critical severity.

Honorable Mention: Crystalline Energy Torpedo

As an honorable mention, the [Crystalline Energy Torpedo Launcher] deserves a moment in the spotlight as the first energy torpedo released in STO as it deals heavy antiproton damage. This means that it is equally as effective against shields as it is hull.

This torpedo was originally obtainable from completing the Crystalline Entity Event and its accompanying Reputation track. It is now available through the Phoenix Prize Pack by exchanging a Very Rare Prize Token.

The torpedo looks like a standard, but brighter, photon torpedo that is crimson red in color – as it mimics the color of standard antiproton beams.

Although it is a projectile it deals antiproton damage which means that its damage is enhanced by consoles that increase antiproton damage. This makes it ideal to couple with builds that depend on antiproton weapons.

This energy torpedo has an innate 2% critical chance and 40% critical severity.
