Klang Games, a game studio based in Berlin, the developer of the sandbox player-driven massively multiplayer game world SEED that’s built on SpatialOS today announced that it has raised $41 million in new funding.

The MMO was first announced back in 2017 and had many interesting features including that it was going to be set within a science fiction universe using an advanced AI system with economics with which players would interact. Around 2019, the game had raised $38 million, but since that time the game has somewhat fallen off the radar.

The funding was co-led by Kingsway Capital and Animoca Brands, which is best known for blockchain gaming. Animoca has been at the forefront of focusing on developing Web3 games – those that use cryptocurrencies – and investing in companies that are part of the crypto metaverse.

Mundi Vondi, chief executive of Klang, said that the new funding will give greater security to the still-developing MMO by providing “the resources for years of development” and “shows that people believe in our vision.”

In SEED, players are given control of AI-controlled virtual humans, called Seedlings, which have personalized avatars. They work and act within the game world but require active caretaking skills and the participation of players in order to maintain their health and activity in the game world.

The game is currently in a pre-alpha state and is undergoing playtests and currently, SEED’s focus has been on creating a place where people can connect and build strong communities in its game world.

The studio said that it intends to use the funds to expand its current staff numbers within the next 12 months, from 70 up to 150 people. As a result, the company is already putting out feelers for new employees to join its development, game design, and other teams.

Although Animoca is now funding the venture, there are no apparent reasons to believe that Klang intends to make SEED a blockchain-based game at this time or in the future. As for Animoca’s role, the company did say that it would provide Klang “with critical support and networking opportunities.”
