It is possible to sign up for the upcoming beta of Sega’s free-to-play MMO, which is slated for release in North America in 2020 on Microsoft’s Xbox One.

All it takes is having a Microsoft account and going through the Xbox Insider Program app to sign up. The beta signups are available for players in the United States and Canada.

Phantasy Star Online 2 puts players into the position of being members of ARKS, a task force dedicated to exploring extrasolar planets to protect the universe from the forces of the evil Falspawn. It is an MMO-hybrid game that will feature numerous missions with cooperative play alongside other agents of ARKS using action RPG combat.

PSO2 combines an art style reminiscent of anime with a hybrid science-fiction and fantasy storyline as well as character classes that can wield guns, hack-and-slash with swords, or bring down the very forces of elemental firepower.

The game also features a somewhat powerful character creator allowing the customization of your ARKS agent in the fashion that you want. There are four distinct races and a fully customizable appearance with a robust system. The game also features aesthetic costuming and an expanding catalog of accessories.

This beta is only available for Xbox One, but the game itself, upon release will be multi-platform with access via Microsoft Windows PCs, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS. It is unknown at this time of the North American beta will have crossplay, but the final launch is expected to allow players on Xbox One and Windows PC to play alongside one another.

The game is currently available in Asia, this will mark the first time PSO2 has been officially available in the Western region and includes localization for English speaking audiences. Originally a Western release had been announced in 2012 but it was quickly canceled in 2013 and not re-introduced until E3 2019.

The closed beta test is still planned for February 2020 and that is expected to eventually follow until a full release in North America and Europe later next year.

For further details and information on the closed beta sign ups, Microsoft has published an article and further details on Phantasy Star Online 2 are available from Sega.
