Cryptic Studios and Perfect World Entertainment have released another lockbox–shortly on the heels of a 15% off lockbox keys extravaganza—and this one continues to feature the Star Trek: Voyager-related Delta Quadrant treatment with a reference to the Krenim and time travel. The so-named “The Year of Hell” lockbox hearkens back to the Voyager episodes where ship and crew are chased across the quadrant by a power-hungry time-altering madman.

Also: for those who didn’t notice, the lockbox release also brings a new pet to the lobi store: puppies! Five new breeds of beagle vanity pets have been added to the Star Trek Online lobi store. Those who watched Star Trek: Enterprise will immediately recognize Porthos, the faithful dog of Archer, Captain of the Enterprise (NX-01).

Also featured in this lockbox is the grand prize of the Krenim Imperium Warship [T6]—which is touted as a slower, heavier destroyer-class outfitted with more durable armor, more resilient shields, and greater weaponry. It will also support an Intelligence and Pilot station.

For those looking to the lobi ship, the Ferengi will be dealing out a Zahl Heavy Cruiser [T6]. This craft will support a Command officer as well as an Intelligence officer station.

The tier 5 starship in these boxes will be the Nihydron Destroyer [T5], which will be able to slot consoles from other Coalition starships.

Cross Faction Starship Traits are appearing in the boxes as well with Overwhelming Force or Tactical retreat for Federation; Tactical Retreat or Reciprocity for Klingons; and Overwhelming Force or Reciprocity for Romulans.

Genetic sequencers to upgrade captain traits are also included. Coalition Squad Tactics (Ground) will add bonuses based on the compilation of the team +shield regen for reach Engineer, +heaing received for every Science, and +run speed/dodge for every Tactical. Taking You With Me (Ground) causes a captain to revive from defeated (triggering a max of 120s) to remain up for a brief period of time during which the captain hits harder and remains immune to incoming damage until the effect expires and the captain immediately hits the gravel again. Coalition Starship Tactics (Space) is a essentially a copy of the ground trait with the same name; and Blaze of Glory (Space) works the same as its ground counterpart as well, but in space.

The Coalition Tactics traits feel amusing, but they’re going to be too variant to be useful for captains who have access to better traits that fit more specific to their builds. As for the Taking You With Me and Blaze of Glory these are gimmicky at best and while it’s neat to not-explode-immediately, you do eventually go boom anyway. These traits could be made a lot better if there were some sort of condition upon which the would-be-destroyed starship actually survives perhaps after successfully destroying the enemy who put the ship in that state (although that would take this trait from a “oh cute,” to a “must have.”)

The boxes will also drop Coalition Disruptor Weapon Crates, which will feature space and ground weapons that support a heavier-hitting disruptor proc. It is said that the special disruptor proc is “more effective than standard disruptor procs, and can stack higher, but only affects the foes’ resistance to Disruptor Damage.” Perhaps this will become a new favorite for disruptor-heavy loadouts in order to increase opponent vulnerability.
