The winter holidays bring out the best in video games and if the game is already good—say if it’s Dungeon Defenders by Trendy Entertainment—it only makes it that much more interesting. In this case, MMO Anthropology sought to look into what the Etherian Holiday Extravaganza DLC for DD had for us and it appears to be not just more-of-the-same, but a majestic Christmas-themed winter wonderland of items.

The most striking change is that the environment has a warm glow with red, green, and white dominating the color scheme of objects in the room. Nutcracker dolls in trios are seen standing against the walls in several places as a reference to the Russian play The Nutcracker[1], a two-act ballet originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. A taxidermy dragon head mounted to the wall receives a glowing red nose as a reference to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer[2], an American Christmas cultural icon from a 1939 booklet by Robert L. May that became a popular song and movie in 1964.

The barkeeper can be seen dressed up in an outfit rendering of Santa Claus with a red robe and black belt, giant white beard, and fat belly. Further, the training dummies (used by players to test the damage of their weapons) are given reindeer antlers.

There’s a lot more strange things to be had in this DLC than immediately meets the eye, such as the addition of a “Mega Snowman” boss (instead of the standard orge) and the delivery of gifts to a Christmas tree in a winter-besieged city.

As other MMOs are wrapping up their events and heading out the door, you can keep playing this little gem for years to come even while not snowbound indoors.
