Sony Confirms Fumito Ueda has Left the Building

Posted by | December 13, 2011

You might not know the name, Fumito Ueda, but you probably know his work. Let’s see, Ico? Shadow the Colossus, maybe? Or perhaps his latest, The Last Guardian? Ueda’s games are good fun, but also important for another reason. When the question comes around about games being art, it’s his work that gets slammed down like a shield against the unbelievers. Recently, Sony has confirmed that Ueda has ended his contract with them, planning to depart for realms as yet unknown. The Last Guardian, his final game with Sony, has been delayed but not canceled. Make of that what you will. Joystiq has the story.

If you haven’t played Shadow of the Colossus, do it. Now. Go, I’m watching you. And pay attention as you play it. The game says an awful lot without using words. When the history of our games is written, Shadow of the Colossus with be remembered as one of the milestones where games transformed from play into culture.
