Video games are a testing ground for new ideas. Most suck. Some become standard issue, and spread across the gaming landscape like digital kudzu. But, there are a few ideas that never seem to escape the game they were born into, even though the idea was really interesting. These are the game mechanics that could, and we need to see more of them. Here’s an article about those lost, but not forgotten game mechanics. 1UP has the story.
The mechanic I’d like to see? Console commands on, well, consoles. Games are complex enough these days that just about anything can go wrong and make the engine choke and spit former engine parts out the tailpipe. A quick hit of the ol’ console, and you’re back in business, instead of blowing hours of progress because dad doesn’t understand you’ve already killed every last mutant in the purifier building in a previous quest.
Just as an example.
I knew I sensed a Fallout 3 rant coming on.
