FCC Transition Team co-chairs are also Warcraft players

Posted by Helvetica (Who am I?) | November 19, 2008

President-Elect Barak Obama may have just hit pay dirt with the gaming generation, he’s appointing people who have actual MMO experience under their belts. Not only last week did we have our first YouTUBE Presidential address, but now we’re starting to see more people put into positions of authority who play the same games we do!

From the titular Gigaom article,
Werbach’s involvement in WoW is worth noting as it raises the possibility that in the coming months, he and Crawford will craft strategic policy positions relevant to online games and worlds, including broadband usage, content regulation, etc. Along with Ito and like-minded academics, Werbach sees both as important to the future of work and technology:

“What [Warcraft] does,” he continued in that post, “is provide an incentive for people to develop new software and ideas for collaborative production. Many of those ideas will translate to other group activities, …

MMORPG News Roundup

Posted by Nelson Williams (Who am I?) | November 18, 2008

There’s more going on in the world than the release for Wrath of the Lich King. In fact, quite a few little bits of information you might like to know are swirling on the winds like snow over a battlefield. Here’s a quick summary of what’s going down out there.

World of Warcraft is revving up the free realm transfer engine again, trying to drive the sudden influx of new and returning players to more balanced servers. They have a thread up on the forums detailing the server openings as they happen. Check it out here.

Warhammer Online is introducing two new tank classes, the Knights of the Blazing Sun and the Dark Elf Black Guard. To celebrate, they’re hosting a special event from November 18th to December 1st called Heavy Metal. Lots of quests, a new Scenario, and tons of gutting …

Fallout 3 Nude Mods and Sexy Patches

Posted by Nelson Williams (Who am I?) | November 15, 2008

I’ve heard it said there are two real drivers for advancing technology; games and porn. So it’s no surprise that when the opportunity comes along for players to mix in porn with their games, they’ll race for the chance like a shore-leaved sailor with a two-for-one coupon to a whorehouse. Given that, here’s a heaping helping of sexy mods and patches for Fallout 3.

Metal Bikini and Lipstick

First up, the girls of Fallout. Let’s just say the wasteland hasn’t been kind on their looks. To help them freshen up, try this Female Makeup Mod. It’s also a real trick to find decent clothes out past the apocalypse, so you might be interested in a Better Underwear Patch, or this Sexy Lingerie Mod to spice up the night life around …

Super Galdelic Hour — Brain Melting Madness from Japan

Posted by Nelson Williams (Who am I?) | November 14, 2008

We here at Vox Ex Machina feel it’s our sacred duty shine a light upon the hidden corners of the gaming world, which is why I’m spending this time to share with you the inexplicable madness of Super Galdelic Hour.

Published by Enix in 2001 for the Playstation 2, this game involves what appears to be a genie hosting a game show that’s also on a space ship. With animal dolls that transform into girls. Wearing swimsuits. It doesn’t make much sense, but then again, do the Japanese really need an excuse to throw CGI girls in animal-themed suits and bounce them around the screen? Not really, and it could be worse. Here’s a six minute demo of the game, lovingly crafted to show off the various themes and game elements, while still raising up a big middle finger to such pathetic human concepts …

Animal Crossing: City Folk

Posted by Nelson Williams (Who am I?) | November 12, 2008

The midnight release for World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King is almost upon us, which is why today is an excellent day to ignore the hype machine altogether and talk about Animal Crossing. The latest game in the series is City Folk, which continues our hero’s struggle to escape from the company store slavery of Tom Nook.

Animal Crossing, for the Gamecube, DS, and of course, Wii, is the story of a young… person-like being who moves out to the country and immediately caught in the net of an evil raccoon. In the game, you choose a male or female character and set to work building up a life in a decrepit cesspool of a small town filled with a variety of charming animaloids who have no problem whatsoever saddling you with debt and responsibilities you never asked for. The subtext in these …

Atlantica Online — Turn Based Old School MMORPG

Posted by Nelson Williams (Who am I?) | November 10, 2008

Atlantica Online is something like what would happen if Final Fantasy 6 got dragged through a Hong Kong cinema before being dipped in 3d sauce and stuffed full of multiplayer. In this world, all the legends of myth have come to life, and you get the supreme honour of beating them back into the collective unconscious. You can also do the same to other players, with PVP guild wars and tournaments being a strong part of the world.

Every player forms his own party, made of his own character and a selection of mercenary warriors who fight with you. All of these folks level up in their own ways, gain special powers, and otherwise beg for fiddling and theorycrafting. You can join other players in mega-parties, and there are good …

Pixar’s Up — The Trailer

Posted by Nelson Williams (Who am I?) | November 10, 2008

Here’s a handy bit of trivia for those who haven’t met me in person. I am, in fact, a cartoon character escaped into this 3d world of yours. Ink and ichor flows in my veins rather than blood, animating, if you will, my stolen body. So it’s no surprise that I love me some cartoons and animated movies.

That is why I’m taking up these precious moments of your day with the trailer to Pixar’s next film, Up. It has nothing, whatsoever, to do with video games, but it does involve an old curmudgeon sailing the skies in his own uprooted house. Check out the trailer here.

Fallout — Deathclaws Through the Ages

Posted by Nelson Williams (Who am I?) | November 7, 2008

The Fallout series has given us many interesting characters and monsters, but few are spoken of in the same tones and hushed whispers as one critter that earns its name. The deathclaw. These monsters are leathery, reptilian horrors who run in packs and spend their time growling, lurking, and pulling Vault Dwellers’ spleens out through their noses. Deathclaws are tough little kitties.

Fallout 3 Deathclaw

With the release of Fallout 3, it has come time to take a look at the deathclaw and all the wonderful moments we’ve shared with it through the years.

In Fallout, you might hear mention of deathclaws from time to time, but your first real encounter with the monster will come around the LA Boneyard. You’ll have to deal with a few of these cheerful puppies for a quest, and then, you can take another quest to

City of Heroes Issue 13 Beta Goodies

Posted by Nelson Williams (Who am I?) | November 6, 2008

City of Heroes, the superhero-themed MMO from Cryptic is currently shoving Issue 13 through their beta process. Be sure to jump on over to the test server to take first advantage of the new features. Among the highlights, you’ll find a Level Pact that binds two character from different accounts to the same XP pool. The upside here is that no matter how much one no-lifer plays his character, the other hero in the pact will advance at the same rate. Not all that great for power gamers, but likely a welcome feature for couples and those with a working life.

You’ll also come across Merits, a kind of currency you get for completing story arcs, Task Forces, and all those other role-playing, plot advancing mission types.

Crafting should be easier for the Villain side, with new “Abandoned Labs” in lower-leveled zones.

The details and …

Fable II — Molyneux Strikes Back

Posted by Nelson Williams (Who am I?) | November 5, 2008

Recently released by Microsoft and Lionhead, Fable 2 is, of course, the sequel to the poorly realized trainwreck that was Fable. In both games, you take on the role of a young adventurer out to make his way in the world. However, the premise here is less about the journey and more the destination as your choices in the game affect what sort of person your fresh-faced and innocent young psychopath becomes.

Fable 2 takes this trick further by giving you more choices, such as the option to be male or female, and then nails you to the game by the base instincts with a lovable pooch who just happens to be part of the user interface. Not only are you given the task of managing morality in NotBritain, but no matter what you do, there will always be your canine companion, smiling up at you …
