Travelogue Azeroth: Halloween and Subtextual Narrative

Posted by | November 1, 2011

So, someone decided to visit Azeroth and give a little bit of a dialogue about the Halloween event. It’s a little strange in there – but in some ways it could be seen as a proxy for real streets and real events.

Hey, virtual worlds have anthropologists too.

GameOgre: Review of World of Tanks — Go Blow Something Up Already!

Posted by | October 28, 2011

world-of-tanks-logo-flamingEven if you’re not into all-out PvP and tank sim, Wargaming.net’s World of Tanks proceeds with a well-made team-based tank MMO. Plus, if you have any interesting World War II after watching too much History Channel, you might still enjoy this. Kyt Dotson over at GameOgre has reviewed the game for everyone.

Here’s some of the highlights:

World of Tanks is a brilliant free-to-play, arcade-styled, squad-based World War II tank sim MMO game developed and published by Wargaming.net and runs atop the BigWorld MMO Technology suite. Since its debut in North America and Europe on April 12, 2011 it has become something of a sensation among gamers. The game

GameOgre: First Look at Natasha of Rusty Hearts

Posted by | October 27, 2011

rusty-hearts-natashaThe most recent patch of Rusty Hearts by Perfect World Entertainment has brought us a new character: the gunslinger Natasha. Easily enough said, her animésque figure has guns and a gun-rack to go along with it—but we’re going to stay away from the really risqué jokes about how females get portrayed in a lot of video game art. Kyt Dotson over at GameOgre is covering a first look at her released character,

Rusty Hearts is a dungeon crawler and brawler, also up-‘til-now most characters have been melee fighters with little range to them—Natasha is the opposite: she’s a ranged attacker with some melee strikes. Like most of the character she

GameOgre: Review of Rusty Hearts; Castlevania Meets MMO

Posted by | October 24, 2011

rusty-hearts-logoFor everyone out there who happens to be a fan of Castlevania, there’s a new humorous “vampires, werewolves, fishmen oh-my!” MMO out there called Rusty Hearts. Kyt Dotson over at GameOgre has taken the time out of a busy schedule to up a review about it.

Here’s some of the highlights:

Rusty Hearts is a free-to-play game developed by Stairway Games for Perfect World Entertainment and it represents a different type of 3D brawler reminiscent of Castlevania and stand-up arcade games. Its Gothic-and-comedy feel give it a lot of character and the cell-shaded animé-eqse animation style produces a profoundly different effect than is delivered in any other game

SiliconANGLE: Free Realms Hits 20M Registered Users

Posted by | October 21, 2011

free-realmsIt looks like Sony Online’s Free Realms is doing really well for itself, recently, they’ve hit 20M registered users. According to Kit Dotson over at SiliconANGLE, though, this doesn’t say very much about the overall health of the MMO game:

This may be a wonderful milestone, but it’s still not as useful as the monthly user count. The reason is because Free Realms happens to be a free-to-play MMO, which means that users can fire-and-forget their accounts and it will build their registered user base. Subscription-based MMOs, such as World of Warcraft and RIFT both continue to charge participants whether they play the game or not (thus generating revenue even

As if everyone here didn’t already know–we voces play the violin; perhaps someday we’ll also achieve the coveted violin overload limit break!

World of Warcraft Takes a Swipe at Gold Farmers with Guardian Cub Vanity Pet

Posted by | October 12, 2011

winged-guardian-cub-companionBlizzard is about to introduce a vanity pet—the Guardian Cub companion—that can be traded between players. Unlike other vanity pets and vanity mounts which get bound to the player’s account (allowing them to trade it between their characters; but not other players) this one can be bought and sold on the auction house.

Kyt Dotson at SiliconANGLE believes this may be part of Blizzard’s long-term plan to combat gold farming, but not for long,
Players can only purchase virtual item vanity pets from Blizzard, sending the dollars into the MMO company’s coffers. This move may initially put a dent in the business operations of gold farmers; but after a while the market may become saturated after the hype wears off.
As for why …

Steve Jobs: He Did Not Go Gently Into That Good Night

Posted by | October 5, 2011

Today marks a milestone so profound that it cuts the technology industry to the bone.

Steve Jobs is dead.

As the luminary presence who brought Apple out of what could have been a death spiral, he is a visionary of brilliant exponential magnitudes and his loss will be felt in many hearts.

Tonight, Jobs sleeps in Avalon with all the other heroes and apple trees.

“Because the people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones who do.” – Gizmodo video tribute to Steve Jobs.

He will be remembered.

GameOgre: R2 Online

Posted by | October 5, 2011

r2-online-squareThere comes a time in the life of every gamer that we must leave our comfortable abode of Blizzard MMORPG-land and try out other titles. However sad, some of those titles are like R2 Online, which is fundamentally a hack-and-slash mediaeval Asian knights and wizards game with little else going for it.

For today’s segment, I direct the audience to GameOgre and Kyt Dotson’s most recent First Impressions of R2 Online article.

It’s time for another Asian-styled knights-and-demons style MMO and R2 Online fits the bill nicely. R2 Online is a free-to-play fantasy MMORPG published Webzen, Inc. that recently went into beta. It features a strong 3D engine with

Sony Yanks Down their Trousers and Moons Customers with Class-Action Arbitration Clause

Posted by | September 16, 2011

Sony_psn_logo In what looks to be a bid to avoid civil class action litigation in the future from users who may have lost personal or financial information when Sony gets hacked again, they’ve added language to their TOS and EULA that forces arbitration on users. This fact, recently mentioned by Kit Dotson over at SiliconANGLE, rather puts a crimp in Sony’s apparent loyalty to responsibility.

Or lack thereof,
According to an article from the BBC, the updated EULA has added a few new clauses, so-called the “Binding Individual Arbitration” clauses which compel the licensees (the customers) regarding “any Dispute Resolution Proceedings, whether in arbitration or court, will be conducted only on an individual basis and not in a class or representative action or as a named or unnamed member in a class, …
