Review: FATE Undiscovered Realms

Posted by | July 17, 2009

FATE Undiscovered Realms is the sequel to FATE by WildTangent. Both of which have all the appearance of Diablo clones with numerous UI and game play design elements in common with the famous Blizzard game. A great deal of the story is front loaded in a long, tedious narrative voiced by an almost Shakespearian actor, but when it comes down to it, playing this game is less about the story and more about plunging through wave after wave of interesting monsters and then tripping over their beautifully rendered corpses.

The narrative and story of this game could have been done a lot better than it was. Especially being that the entire story at the beginning was narrated. Instead it comes across as a 1-2-3 style quest with nearly no explanation of why the 1-2-3 need be done. We found ourselves …

World of Warcraft Dev Q&A — The Warrior

Posted by | July 17, 2009

A new Q&A session with the World of Warcraft dev team is up, and this time it’s focused on the Warrior. For my money, the Warrior is probably the most complex class in the game to play, and the one that relies most on technique, finesse, and situational awareness. Of course, my first main was also an Undead Warrior, so maybe I’m biased.

You can read it all over here at the Under Development logs on worldofwarcraft.com.

Video Game Sales Drop, Used Games See a Rise

Posted by | July 16, 2009

With the jobless rate merrily leaving the Land of Hard Times for the Valley of Revolution, even gamers have seen an effect. The slumping economy had to drag down the gaming industry eventually, and now hard data is showing the effects of that sucking tide.

According to Bloomberg.com, video games sales have fallen nearly 30% across hardware and software, with most of the drop being placed squarely on the shoulders of the money-printing beast, Nintendo. Demand for their Wii console has slowed, slackening the market. Not to mention the yawning void that separates our present time-space from the last assault of hit titles.

Coming in to feed off the cash-starved remains of the economy’s victims, used game sales have grown fat and powerful. Better than a third of game sales in May have fallen under the blighted banner of the resale legion, a trend which is …

One-Two Punch — UFC Undisputed Sells Millions, Sequel Announced

Posted by | July 12, 2009

UFC means Ultimate Fighting Championship, the flagship program of the Mixed Martial Arts world. Er, right, forgot my audience for a moment… Kung-fu boxing on TV. Recently, the UFC licensed out to THQ the rights for a game based on the sport and their name. THQ, in return, conjured up UFC Undisputed 2009. Apparently they did a good job of it. Lorenzo Fertitta, one of the UFC owners, had this to say on the game, “Now the UFC video game has been a massive success with three million copies sold.”

Which is really all you need to know.

The fun part of this is where the UFC approached EA to do the game. EA being the biggest name in video game sports, it made perfect sense. But the UFC then …

Champions Online Character Creation and Interview

Posted by | July 11, 2009

Champions Online is a new MMORPG in the works concerning the doings of superheroes in a comic book universe. Based on the pen and paper roleplaying game, also called Champions, the online iteration is built around comic book flavour and unholy rivers of character customization. If that sounds something like City of Heroes, you’d be right. In fact, Champions Online siphoned off some of the defining talent from the old CoH game, including Jack Emmert. You might know him as the hero Statesman.

Oh, did I mention there’s a video?

Review: Chuzzle Deluxe

Posted by | July 10, 2009

Color matching games have long become the Connect4 of the penultimate puzzle arcade game experience for the PC—the solace of sleepy housewives, bored office workers, and insomniac marathon Made for SciFi movie watching. Chuzzle from Popcap games is no exception to the shifting bands of random objects, matching up to three similar to cause them to vanish from the field…

At least—during a cursory examination.

Chuzzles appear to be cute blobs of fur, akin to Koosh balls with eyes. The object of the game is to shuffle rows of these fuzzy animals to that similarly colored chuzzles line up in as few as three. When this event happens they explode with a squeak and their eyeballs are sucked up into a flask on the side of the screen. Their eyeballs!

Chuzzle is a morbidly adorable color matching game where we are asked to …
